The History of Tattooing

The art of tattooing has a long history, with the first tattoos being made thousands of years ago, so thirty years of tattoo history is, in comparison, a relatively short period. The collection created by the famous Amsterdam tattooist Henk Schiffmacher digitised by Picturae is, however, truly impressive.

Picturae has digitised Schiffmacher's entire collection. This collection includes tools, designs, photographs, sculptures, etchings and woodblock prints. Subsequently, these images were saved in Picturae's Memorix and descriptions of the objects were added by staff from the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum. Picturae has also taken 360 degree panoramic 'roundshots' in Schiffmacher's tattoo shop.

The museum is based on Henk Schiffmacher's collection which he has brought together over more than thirty years. The collection consists of hundreds of tattoo machines and hand tools, countless pictures, flash (tattoo examples), paintings, drawings, sculptures and even pieces of tattooed skin!
