‘World Class Rapid Digitization of Cultural Heritage’

New KITLV image archive

Picturae has created a new image archive for the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV). It now includes more than 150,000 photographs, prints and drawings of mainly Indonesia, Netherlands East Indies, Surinam and the Caribbean. The collection also incorporates images of local migrants who temporarily lived there and/or re-established themselves in the Netherlands.

An image archive with new functionalities

The new image archive features several new interesting functionalities in addition to the usual applications. One example is that it is now possible to apply several filters within a single facet (filter category), something that is also referred to as stacked filtering. This means that if you apply a 'Print' and a 'Glass negative' filter within the 'Object type' facet category, the result you get are images whose 'Object Type' are 'Print' or 'Glass negative'. In addition, the word cloud with tags offer a new way of filtering. In this case the word cloud was based on key words, which allows for more specified and an intuitive manner of searching.
