Get to Know Jan-Arie Karels
Although Jan-Arie Karels, Head of Engineering at Picturae, prefers to deflect attention to his team rather than bask in the spotlight, we asked him to spill the beans on the (technical) developments at Picturae. He’s been with us for about 15 years now, showing he thoroughly enjoys his time here. Jan-Arie says, “Sometimes we receive requests from clients, other times we take the initiative to develop a system that optimizes the entire process. We always let the systems evolve from practical needs: the operators who work with our systems day in and day out. Our job is to build a machine that makes the workflow even more efficient and meets all quality standards. With each system, we strive for further professionalization. This process starts with extensive discussions with operators and clients. What is needed, and how can we make it faster and more enjoyable? Together with our software, we offer a complete package for the digitization workflow, which is truly our added value.
At Picturae, I have a lot of freedom, trust, and space to develop myself. After an approved business case, our team can build a digitization workflow. My task is mainly to bring the right people together and keep motivating them through the bumps we encounter in the process. I also keep an eye on the big picture and ensure that the digitization system and workflow are developed hand-in-hand. So, during the development phase, we have our own space, with just our team. The software developers literally sit around the system. It’s an immersive experience. Such development never goes without its challenges, and sometimes heated discussions arise, always focused on the content. This eventually leads to innovative new solutions.
