First GBGC in Southeast Asia
For the first time in history, the Global Botanic Gardens Congress (GBGC) has been held in Southeast Asia. This year, the 8th edition of the GBGC took place in the lush city-state of Singapore. This significant event was jointly organised by the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) and Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). Picturae could not miss this important opportunity to get together with botanical experts from around the world and was represented at a booth staffed by Victor and Sebastiaan.
Botany in Southeast Asia
The Southeast Asia region is home to over 100 organisations that includes botanic gardens, arboreta and other NGOs and is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, housing approximately 20 to 25 per cent of the world’s plant and animal species. This year, 8GBGC revolved around the theme “Botanic Gardens – People and Plants for a Sustainable Future”. In the face of pressing challenges such as global biodiversity loss and climate change, botanic gardens play a vital role in shaping a sustainable future, for humanity and the environment. The GBGC aims to explore innovative approaches for botanic gardens to fulfil their missions in research, conservation, education, and outreach.
Exchange knowledge
This congress is an excellent platform for botanic gardens, institutions of higher learning, policymakers and plant enthusiasts to get together, exchange knowledge, network and draw inspiration from one another’s experience. Picturae sponsored the congress with a booth, goodies and useful insights in preserving herbarium collections, as well as ways of making them accessible for now and future generations. Victor and Sebastiaan showcased our digitisation specialties at our booth. Equipped with swag items like fridge magnets, pocket notebooks and a video of our most recent herbarium project in Florence, Italy, we discussed the importance of digitising herbarium collections and making them accessible online. It was great to be present in Singapore, and to hear all the inspiring talks, attend various interactive workshops and exchange knowledge with experts in the field!
