2D Materials

Digitization books and images brings history back to life.

More often we are able to consult our own history online. Even a visit to a museum is no longer limited to physical tour. Paintings, documents, photographs, postcards or pictures are increasingly available on the Internet. Picturae digitizes these objects in such a way that both the expression and information stay intact.

From analogue to digital: calendars, minutes, documents, letters, maps, photos or paintings, we digitize them all. Regularly the originals are to valuable or vulnerable to showcase to the general public. Therefore we make exact and truthful copies in which we take color, information and fabric expression into account. After all, the expression and the completeness needs to be kept intact digitally as if it is the original.
Tailored digitalization: whether the goal is to publish, substitution or just secure a collection, we always offer custom solutions. Nevertheless, the high speed of out digitization process and quality never preclude one another. We operate according to a quality assurance system in accordance with the Metamorfoze norm. A quality standard only a few can guarantee or deliver. We take the utmost care of your complete projects. Once a collection is digitalized we, if desired, can link the files to a database and collection management system.

The Metamorphic guidelines are intended for mass digitization of two-dimensional visual material. The program has gained much attention (internationally) within the cultural and heritage sector.

Picturae is specialized in high-quality digitalization according to the ‘Metamorfoze’ guidelines and will be happy to assist you in the process from inquiry till delivery.

Deltae

Picturae Deltae

The free web service Deltae (www.delt.ae) is an online quality management tool developed by Picturae. The universal test reader for photographic reproduction focuses on controlling consistency in image quality.

The tool sets the measured values against a chosen quality standard, thus determining the image quality.

XXL

XXL Formats
XXL Formats

Digitizing large size maps are not the only material that can be challenging. Posters, drawings, prints, paintings, watercolors, etches, lithographs, playing cards and other large original formats ask for the utmost care when handling.

XL formats are mostly digitized in multiple separated scans to ensure optimal resolution. These scans are “stitched” later on in the process. This procedure asks for extremely precise digitization. Therefore, Picturae has developed an XL table specifically for this process. We have the equipment and operators to digitize every XL sized material for the exact reproduction of the originals.

V-Shape

V-Shape Scanner
V-Shape Scanner

The burdening of the material during the digitalization process is one of the concerns of our customers. We share that concern. Books and magazines can be very vulnerable; hence a delicate process is of the essence.

Our V-Shape solution has an angle of only 100degrees. This ensures the originals is spread out to a minimum during the process. Digitizing with the V-Shape is intended for book up to 40x60cm (single page). During the process the pages are gently pressed against a glass pane. The V-Shape will be configured to guarantee the panes to press with the least force as possible, still ensuring the best quality scan.

Negatives

If you can look through it, it is not always negative.

Negatives and slides collections are often invisible to the public, stored in depots. At Picturae we have developed an innovative production process that enables the digitization of each collection of negatives and slides.

The most famous negative format is of course the usual negative, both in black and white and in color. However, we digitize all types and sizes of negatives and positives. You can contact us for the largest glass negatives, slides, lanterns and even x-ray films.
In principle, it is possible to digitize everything that you can see through. For negative digitization, Picturae offers a complete range of solutions. From secure transport, dust-free and digitalization, to online collection of the collection and storage of the images in our e-depot.

Negatives & Positives

The carriers of negatives are made of glass or plastic in a variety of different thicknesses and the packages. Adittionally, the state of the material is never the same. For each digitization cycle, tailor-made solutions are created to allow the entire collection to meet the highest quality digitization standards.

In order to efficiently digitize a transparency collection, Picturae has developed a concept, the contact sheet method, which uses transparent insertion boxes. By putting the negatives or slides in these cases, the entire object can be digitized at one time. This makes the process faster so that a large-scale collection can be digitized at lower cost. It is also easy to select negatives that need to be digitized at higher quality.

Negatives & Positives Scanning
Microfilm Digitization

Microfilm

There are still many (heritage) institutions that have parts of their collection on analogue carriers such as microfiches, comfiches, jackets, roll movies or windows cards. Due to the relatively long life of these analogue carriers, it has been the safest way of archiving for years. Unfortunately, these carriers are not very user-friendly. Reading and obtaining information from microfilm often takes a lot of time. In addition, special equipment is required to view or print the images.

There is a variety of reasons and benefits wherefore we recommend to digitize microfilm are: Extra backup, minimizing transport of original source documents, maintain original analogue carriers, digitize in your desired resolution (gray or black and white), digital photo search speed , Scan the documents by multiple people simultaneously, excluding scanning and printing equipment, indexing or extended data entry, link scans to existing databases or resharing drawings to original format.

Picturea has years of experience and knowledge and are able to provide you with appropriate solutions for digitizing your microfiches, comfiches, jackets, roll films and windows cards. With the latest movie scanners, we guarantee the best quality digital images.

Of course, you may want to know more about digitizing your analogue carrier. Our account managers and sales services are happy to contact you. Of course this can be done at your location, but you are more than welcome to Heiloo. And when you're in Heiloo, feel free to quickly take a look at our kitchen.

Cases

A few of our successfull project of the past twenty years digitalization and development

Audiovisual

Physical audiovisual media are known as vulnerable carriers, and its playback is becoming increasingly problematic.
But this imminent loss of information can be prevented.

Image and sound materials are valuable material and are stored on different types of physical carriers. These, often recorded, analogue recordings may be lost due to damage to the carrier or the lack of specific playback equipment. And even modern digital carriers are threatened to be lost and are often more vulnerable than old analogue carriers.
Picturae has the experience, knowledge and equipment to safely store, digitize and provide audiovisual collections and provide metadata.
Despite the enormous variety and condition of the old audiovisual carriers, we are able to deliver predictable results of constant and high quality. Through the use of very (cost) efficient workflows, we are able to digitally digitize thousands of hours of AV material for our customers and secure for the future.

Film

Film is a beautiful and durable medium and rarely contains images that go 50 or 80 years back in time. This makes this old film material a valuable source of information and gives us a glimpse of long-lived times.

Due to lack of working playback equipment or damage to the material, film collections are often no longer accessible. And ultimately, film material is also vulnerable to decay, and this process has often been (invisibly) used years ago.

Digitizing films makes it possible to preserve the images for the future and easily accessible. To process historical film material, correctly and safely, one requires specific knowledge and experience. At Picturae we are very experienced in processing and digitizing 8mm, Super8 and 16mm. Also shrunk (vinegar syndrome) or highly contaminated material can be treated by us.

Common activities are; Barcoding the film reels and cans, material identification and supplementing the inventory list. The film inspection and cleaning involves the application of a run-up strip, the repair of film welding and a manual or mechanical film cleaning.

Among other things, we digitize the following formats: 8mm, Super8, 9.5mm, 16mm.
Optional or magnetic sound can be synchronized. The output scan resolutions are: HD, 2K or 4K. File formats such as DPX, FFV1 or QuickTime can be delivered to hard disk or via ftp. In post production we can perform color correction or restoration of the image and sound.

Herbarium

We digitize herbarium collections on a conveyor belt.

A collection of dried plants, often mounted on paper and provided with the scientific name, is not a standard 2D or 3D object. The specimens are 3D objects provided with 2D information. Picturae has developed a link with innovative software that takes into account the fragility and dimension of the specimens. As a result, we are able to handle high speed and quality collections. The corresponding data is introduced in collaboration with our partner Alembo, so that the specimens are searchable online.
